‘Tis the last of the BBQ season!

7 Sep

With a spate of lovely sunshine this past weekend in amongst what has been a dreary week or two, I fear that the last of the BBQ season is upon us. So don an apron, get outside and make the most of it! here are some ideas to get you started.

First thing’s first

For any BBQ the primary priority is fashion. Whatever rocking outfit you decide to wear, make sure that you protect it from hot fat flying your way from the frantic grilling of those tasty sausages! Don’t leave it to the men, just wear an apron! How very old fashioned you may say – but certainly not with this stylish affair. Designed by Oliver Harvey the denim front of house apron may be aimed at the professionals, but why have anything less in your own home? Made from 100% cotton, this premium apron sports a funky antique brass adjustable halter, nice and lengthy non tangle waist ties, a large mitred centre pocket and a free wash bag to keep it from wear and tear in the washing machine. I particularly love that it’s quite large, and covers your whole front. It actually reminds me of cute dungarees from my childhood with the brass buckle! The aprons are available from the Oliver Harvey website at www.oliverharvey.co.uk and RRP at £17.99. It would also make a great christmas gift for your dad or other half – if you want to get in there early with your gift shopping!

Keep it clean

The team at Ora kindly sent me a sample of their new round kitchen roll. It’s a great idea, as there are no pesky inner tubes to throw away, it looks funky on the work top and is nice and thick to wipe up those inevitable spills. I also use it for soaking up grease from food, as it’s really absorbent. Available exclusively at Tesco  for the bargain price of £1.90. See the YouTube video here.

Refresh Yourself
If you want a lighter drink this summer try Periseco. I loved the bubbles (very similar to prosecco) but a lot fruitier. Flavours include iced melon, and cucumber. It is only £3.99 per bottle and is available at Tesco stores.

Fruity!

Fruity!

Verdict: 8 / 10 very very yummy – even if the cucumber is a little different! I would recommend this lighter drink with a lower alcohol volume to keep from getting too drunk for summer day time drinking!

Sauce it up

It wouldnt be a BBQ without the right condiments. Being a classic northerner if it isn’t smothered in gravy, it needs moisture from elsewhere. If you want to go posh without breaking the bank try the Newman’s range.

Newman’s Own Blue Cheese Dressing is extremely creamy and yummy – available from Sainsbury’s and Waitrose, RRP £1.50. I do wish it had fewer calories however! 🙂

Goes great on salads or as a dip for wings

Newman’s Own Original Sticky Barbecue Sauce is available from Tesco, Asda, Waitrose, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, RRP £1.99 and has a delicious tangy taste.

Great for burgers or as a marinade

A dash of light fizz

Another summery drink comes in the form of the Barefoot range. Designed to be served over ice as a lighter drink it comes in three flavours: Crisp White, Crisp Red and a delicious rosé titled Perfectly Pink. All three are scrumptious, and perhaps it’s just as I get older, but I really cannot hack day time drinking if it is the strong stuff anymore! So I am loving that the shelves seem to be fast expanding with ranges of lighter options. Barefoot Refresh is available from stockists nationwide with an RRP of £6.99.

The Beauty Edit

As I write this on the train I find myself stood next to the second hottest man I have ever seen (the hottest being my boyfriend of course) He smells amazing, looks so fresh and clean, and his clothes are entirely crease free. It got me thinking wow, I am really going to look the opposite of this (like a messy hung over pile of crap) at any festivals that I go to this year. Well, this makes my blog post even more relevant as I am sure it does not have to be as bad as that. With a few nifty products and a little effort I can still look a little human at a festival!
On this note, I have put together some quick and easy products perfect for festival preparation. Whether you are a glamper or a grotty camper, it can always be good to keep fresh as best you can while at a festival!
MaskerAide
These larger than average sized packets make the perfect pick me up for after a weekend of grime and sun. Try the Dextox Diva after the festival and the Party Prep packet before you go. The packet itself is bulging with product which I love, usually with the ‘travel sized’ beauty products on the market I feel there is never enough included.
The smell is fruity and fresh but not overpowering, and the thick paste feels like it really penetrated my pores.
Available from Selfridges & Harvey Nichols £5.00, they are a little indulgent but worth every penny.

Keeping it Fresh
Festival morning mouth. Dry from the heat of your tent, furry from the sugary alcohol. Perhaps even garlic from some food stall delight. Not a nice feeling, or smell – and brushing out of your water bottle never feels as effective. The UltraDEX Fresh Breath Oral Spray is one way to be sure that you remain perfectly kissable even with the odds stacked against you. With its clinically proven technology, the brand claims that one spray is all it takes to instantly eliminate odour-causing compounds (VSC) and deliver 12 hours of fresh breath confidence.
I love that the bottle is really small, and the mint flavour not too overpowering (I guess its the chemicals that do all of the work to eliminate the bacteria causing odour rather than masking it) I certainly felt a lot fresher and more confident after use.
It is available from major retailers and online at www.ultradex.co.uk. At £2.75 for a bottle that will last 130 sprays it wont break the bank either!

In case of emergency
A grubby cut can quickly get infected at a festival, so use these cute plasters to keep it clean!
Dermocare WWF Safari plasters are wash proof, breathable protection from dirt and bacteria and are a stylish alternative to standard plasters so you can stay feeling and looking good whilst protecting any festival injuries.
Available at www.dermocare.co.uk for £2.99.

Tent-hair
Festivals can be a real pain when it comes to hair. Too greasy, or otherwise (after a quick wash from a cold water bottle or tap) too dry and frizzy. I love label.m Therapy Rejuvenating Oil Mist – it gives my hair a nice shine and tames the flyaway frizz nicely. Containing the REJUVEN-8TM Complex with Moroccan Argan Oil, it is perfect for combatting dry, dull hair. And for a festival it is a lot lighter and easier to use than taking conditioner with you!

An oldie but a goodie
I have yet to find a dry shampoo as good as Batiste, in particular their cherry variety. Available from £1.99-£.99 in most stores it is the festival essential!

Smell Divine
Don’t bother taking your expensive perfume to a festival, instead buy a 50ml bottle of Avon Tahitian Holiday Eau de Toilette Spray for under a tenner. The amazing coconut smell is bound to mask the beer and sweat smells! And it’s value for money means that you won’t feel bad dousing yourself in it.

Cute Alert: First day of Summer

21 Jun

Today is the first day of summer, and our model, Mabel, has kindly agreed to pose for this quarter’s incredibly cute alert.

Hello!

Hello!

Picnic Time

1 May

It may not seem it with the rainy day we’re having today but summer is on the way, and that means picnic time! My favourite picnic set this year is in Debenhams and is currently half price at £39.99. I love the vintage basket look, and the miniature salt and pepper shakers are adorable. Top it off with a few block colour tumblers from the Rocha range and have fun in the sun. The only drawback with wicker sets is that they may not be suitable for heavier items, and are more suited to fit into the back of a car.

Verdict: 9/10
